Relief for the Afflicted
Intro
A. DIVINE JUDGMENT UPON THEIR PERSECUTORS (2 Thess. 1:6).
1. God’s judgment is just.
2. Affliction for the afflicters.
B. DIVINE RELIEF TO THE SAINTS (2 Thess. 1:7a).
1. The relief of believers.
2. Paul assumes they will be alive when Christ returns.
C. TIMING OF THE RELIEF (2 Thess. 1:7b-10).
1. When the Lord comes in judgment at the second coming of Christ (2 Thess. 1:7-8).
a. “when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven” -
b. “with His mighty angels” –
c. “flaming fire” is describing Christ and not His angels,
d. dealing out retribution
e. “penalty of eternal destruction” -
f. “away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power” -
2. When the Lord comes to be glorified in His saints (2 Thess. 1:10).
a. Glory for Christ.
b. Glory for us..
c. “to be marveled at among all who have believed”
d. “on that day”
e. “for our testimony to you was believed” -
Conclusion
Things to ponder: Do you ever identify with the struggles of Asaph in Ps. 73? How should believers respond to those who persecute us? How can the relief we receive at the second coming be an encouragement to our faith to persevere?
